Today Mark Carney had a busy feed.

He posted that Canada is making unprecedented investments in defense, reaching NATO's 2% target for the first time in decades and on track for 5%. He posted about the National Electricity Strategy, which aims to double grid capacity by 2050. He posted about a green home retrofit program offering up to $1,700 a year in energy savings for homeowners in Quebec, BC, Nova Scotia, PEI and Manitoba. He spoke publicly about antisemitism and keeping Canadians safe.

And none of this is false. NATO spending is genuinely up. The electricity strategy is real. The retrofit program exists. These are legitimate things a government can point to.

Here is what was not in the feed today.

CUSMA. The trade agreement covering 85 percent of Canadian exports to the United States. The deadline for that review is July 1st. Two days from now. Canada still does not have a finalized deal. Trump said weeks ago he is not looking to renew the agreement.

This is not a small file sitting quietly in the background. It is the single largest economic question facing the country this year, and it landed nowhere in today's messaging.

Meanwhile the Canadian dollar is sitting at 70 cents American. Inflation hit 3.2% in May, the highest since late 2023. A $400 million carbon capture project in Alberta is threatening to cancel because of Carney's own deal with Danielle Smith. The BC vacant condo plan is being called a developer bailout by critics. These are the stories actually shaping how Canadians are living right now.

None of this means today's announcements were a deliberate distraction. Governments communicate wins when they have them, and these were real wins. But the timing is worth noticing on its own terms. Two days before the most consequential trade deadline in years, the message to Canadians was about defence spending targets and home retrofit rebates.

The CUSMA deadline does not move because the feed got busy. It arrives Wednesday regardless of what got posted today.
